In the world of music theory, an “interval” refers to the space between two notes. When two notes are played at the same time, we call that a Harmonic Interval. If they are played one after the other, we call that a Melodic Interval.

We construct intervals using a half step as our unit of measurement. Remember, a half step moves one step up or down on the piano roll.
A Minor Second is built from one half step. A Major Second is built from two half steps. Three half steps in a row create a Minor Third, and so on. Check out the list below to learn the names and half steps needed to create all the different intervals in an octave.
