Objective: Strengthen students’ understanding of major and minor triads by adding the missing note and naming the chord quality.
This game is connected to the Triad Practice activity from the supplemental materials section of the Fundamentals of Harmony Unit in the Music Production 1 Course.
Students will open this Soundtrap template which contains a single Piano MIDI track. Each chord inside of the MIDI region contains the root and fifth of a triad, with space left for the missing third.
You will reveal one target note name at a time and students must add the note in and figure out whether it makes the triad a major or minor chord.
To “win” the round, students must say the full explanation out loud. For example: “E is a major third above C. This is a C major triad.”
Once the correct answer is confirmed, any student who didn’t get it right adds the missing note to the Piano Roll. Then the next target note is revealed.
