Reflection: Experimentation

Reflect on how risk-taking, curiosity, and creative limits keep your sound fresh.

There are three key components to the practice of experimentation in music making:

  1. Risk-Taking

  • Bending the Rules

  1. Curiosity

    • Avoiding Complacency

  2. Creative Limitations

  • Explorative Frameworks

  • Setting Rules

  • Prompting

It’s easy for your sound to go stale without a healthy dose of experimentation. Taking creative risks and staying curious keeps things fresh and moving forward in the studio. The trick is staying motivated when inevitably  most experiments don’t “work,” meaning you won’t get something cool out of each new thing you try.

It might be counterintuitive, but utilizing limitations can actually unlock creativity in meaningful ways. Using explorative frameworks to determine what concepts and/or tools you want to look at can help direct and kickstart your experimentation. Setting rules and following prompts can force you think outside of your normal creative box.

What sort of creative experiments have you been running? What sorts of creative limitations have been helping you break new ground?
