Lawrence says drummers “keep time and form the foundation" so the rest of the band can focus on melody and harmony. Does a song need someone holding down the rhythm? What might happen without it?
Lawrence explains that good music has layers hitting the lows, mids, and highs so they “fit together without clashing." Think about stacking things in real life, like ingredients in a sandwich or players on a team. Why does having different parts that don't overlap too much make the whole thing work better?
Hint: you wouldn’t want a bread sandwich would you?
Music is always changing. What sounds good today would probably sound bad to someone 20 years ago. What are some layers that are popular today? Where do you think music is headed?
