Now that you have the language to describe the way sound sounds, the tools decode how music works, and the perspective to understand how artists fit into the larger culture, you should be able to understand your preferences. 

If you need help, we've provided some additional questions below:

Sounds:

• Do you think the music you like sounds cool? 

  • What makes it sound cool?

• Is there a particular element in the music that you like? 

  • What do you like about that element?

• Is there something about the form that you find effective?

Messages/Feeling:

• Do you like the way it makes you feel?  

  • What elements of the music make you feel that way?

• If there are vocals and lyrics, do they make you feel a certain way? 

  • Is it just the lyrics or the way the lyrics are being delivered?

• Is there something larger that is being communicated in the music that resonates with you? What is it? 

Culture:

• Do you like what the artists represent? 

  • Do you like the way they look?

  • Is the style of music or the artist you’re looking at connected to a larger cultural movement that speaks to you?

  • Do you see elements of yourself and your world in the music and the imagery connected to the music?
