Reflect on what you learned from Hannah about copyright.
Reflection
After watching Hannah’s interview, please reflect on what you’ve learned about copyright. We encourage you to discuss what was meaningful for you, but if you need help getting started, see below for some prompts to get the reflection ball rolling:
Every piece of music contains two copyrights: the master recording and the composition.
Record labels distribute master recordings.
Publishers manage the composition copyright.
A copyright is a piece of intellectual property to be exploited by creatives, business people, and companies.
There is a constant push and pull for producers between upfront fees and long term profits from points (percentages) of a copyright. When one goes up, the other usually goes down.
Those that benefit the most from the complicated copyright systems are the least incentivized to change them.
New technologies are being developed that exist way outside of the original copyright framework but are still subject to the same limitations.
