The pacing guide reflects an average school year with 35 weeks of active instruction. The materials have been laid out to ensure that the learning objectives are met while giving students ample work time.
We know that each class has a unique mix of students and is subject to a schedule particular to that school. Please think of the pacing guide as a recommended schedule for introducing concepts, working through projects, and engaging in listening parties. The pacing guide is not meant to be prescriptive!
You can refer to the work hours and put together your own pacing guide. Please remix our curriculum to suit yourself and your students!
The pacing guide is broken down into two sheets:
MP1 Core Curriculum + Supplemental Materials:
Each category of core curricular materials is outlined on the left. They include Key Concept Video, In the Studio Video, Basics of the Basics Video, Assignment, Work Time, Listening Party, and Activity/Reading.
Each Key Concept and In the Studio Video block also includes its corresponding glossary and assessment.
The core curriculum is organized by weeks and months.
Supplemental materials are organized by their corresponding core curriculum unit.
Min/Max/Target Work Hours:
Each student will take different amounts of time to complete each assignment. To account for this variation, we included minimum, maximum, and target amounts of time that students should be working on each project, assignment, and activity.
Some schools’ schedules only allow for one semester of music production.
YPG is always going to advocate for at least one full year course, ideally followed by another year or two of more advanced courses, but we recognize it’s not always an option. If your school falls into this category, we recommend reducing the number of units you teach and the amount of assignments you give for each unit.
Under no circumstances should you cut back on student work time or get rid of the final project. Student work time is the most important part of class time and the final project gives students time to make a personal statement. Students should have at least two weeks to work and have listening parties on final projects.
