Half & Whole Step Practice

Games

Objective: Strengthen students’ ability to discern between half and whole steps using note names.

This game is connected to the Half & Whole Step Practice activity from the supplemental materials section of the Fundamentals of Harmony Unit in the Music Production 1 Course.

Students will open this Soundtrap template which contains a single Piano MIDI track. Each note inside of the MIDI region is followed by an empty space where students will add a new note, but only after you reveal the required interval (see below).

After you finish reading all eight intervals, students will raise their hands if they think they have all of the correct answers. Choose on a student and let them read their answers by saying the note added and its relationship to the given note. For example, “G# is a half step above G.” If they got them all right, they win. If not, choose different students to read their answers until one gets them all correctly.

Use the notes and interval relationships below. Please note that you can repeat this exercise using the same Soundtrap template, but changing the intervals.
