What is a Capstone Mentor?
A capstone mentor’s role varies based on community partners, advisory boards, and available learning opportunities. As the CTE teacher for this class, you will be the primary mentor. Your expertise is essential in guiding students through their projects and linking their academic work to real-world music industry careers.
In the Advanced Music Technology and Business CTE Capstone Course, your main responsibility is to facilitate, guide, and hold students accountable throughout their Capstone Projects. The curriculum is student-driven with content delivered via videos. You won’t be teaching traditionally but will use your industry experience to mentor and provide critical insights.
Primary Responsibilities
Supervision and Accountability:
Supervise students' progress and ensure they remain accountable for meeting their project benchmarks put forth in their production schedule.
Conduct regular capstone check-ins to monitor their development and provide constructive feedback. (Capstone Check-ins are built into the curriculum and held at key points throughout the year)
Mentorship and Industry Connection:
Leverage your expertise and industry experience to provide students with invaluable insights and guidance on their projects.
Help students understand how their work applies to and impacts the music industry and related careers.
Leadership and Facilitation:
Lead and facilitate student-driven learning, fostering an environment where students take charge of their growth as an artist.
Encourage and guide students to explore innovative solutions and creative approaches in their projects.
Support and Guidance:
Respond to students’ questions and provide the necessary support to overcome challenges they may encounter.
Offer guidance on practical aspects of their projects, drawing from your own industry experience. (Their will ample opportunities for this during the listening parties)

CTSOs:
Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs) can play a vital role in providing work-based learning and mentorship opportunities for the Advanced Music Technology and Business CTE capstone course. These organizations offer students access to industry-specific resources, networking opportunities, and real-world experiences. Through CTSOs, students can participate in competitions, workshops, and internships that mirror professional practices in the music industry. Additionally, CTSOs can connect students with mentors who are industry professionals, offering guidance, feedback, and support throughout their capstone projects. This involvement enhances students' practical skills and prepares them for successful careers in the music industry.
California-specific organizations such as SkillsUSA and the Technology Student Association (TSA) serve as foundational pillars within the CTSO network, offering invaluable support for CTE programs.
CBOs:
Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) are great for work-based learning and mentorship opportunities! Establishing an advisory board for your program with local industry leaders and community representatives is a good way to start and can provide valuable recommendations and resources. Connecting with your school district and local colleges can also help facilitate introductions to relevant CBOs. Researching through local chambers of commerce and online directories can further identify organizations aligned with the CTE program’s goals.
